Organ transplantation in individuals with urea cycle disorders and classic organic acidurias

Date: 13 November 2018
Location: 8th Annual E-IMD Members Meeting; Brussels, Belgium

This presentation, by Monique Williams et al. of Erasmus Universitair Medisch Centrum, Rotterdam, presents the results of a study exploring the role of liver and/or kidney transplantation in PA and MMA patients. The analysis, performed over 235 transplantations for MMA and 140 transplantations for PA, showed mortality of 11% for MMA and 24% for PA. Importantly, the rate for complications was 80% for MMA and 74% for PA. The presenters conclude that transplantation can improve patient outcomes, but there should be an awareness of the mortality risk and the high risk of complications.
